Details from the Cheshire Military Museum of Frank Onion's World War 1Service identify that he had originally served with the 22ndBattalion of the Cheshire Regiment before being transferred to theLabour Corps. When Regiment battalions were transferred to the LabourCorps the members of these battalions received new Army Servicenumbers. These numbers were issued in blocks and by knowing the newnumber one can establish the Battalion transferred from and the newBattalion assigned to. Number 38677 assigned to Frank Onions fallsinto the number allocated to the 65th Labour Company of the newlyformed Labour Corps. All members of this newly formed unit had beenformerly sering with the 22nd Battalion of the Cheshire Regiment priorto transfer. Five Battalions of the Cheshire Regiment raised in 1916,the 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, and 22nd were transferred to the LabourCorps in April 1917. The 22nd Battalions was formed at Chester inDecember 1916 and sent to France the same month and then in April 1917was transferred over to the Labour Corps. The Labour Corps did nothave a Cap badge of it's own and soldiers who suddenly transferredfrom numerous regiments continued to wear the cap badge of theiroriginal unit. They did have a brass shoulder tiltleissued with LAB.Cwhich was worn on each shoulder strap. Royal Warrant created theLabour Corps on the 21st February 1917. The purpose of this newlyformed Corps was to supply labour to meet hte increasing demands oncommunications and to carry out other labour intensive activitiesassociated with supply to and maintenance of the front line. Tasksincluded unloading and moving stores, cleaning the battlefield ofdebris, maintaining and repairing roads plus building light railways. In extreme circumstances as in March 1918 they picked up rifles andfought alonside the infantry. Their work was often carried out underhazardous conditions of fire.
