Nine Elms British Cemetery is located west of Poperinge. The cemeterywas begun and used by the 3rd Australian and 44th Casualty ClearingStations when they moved to Poperinghe (now Poperinge), from Brandhoekand Lijssenthoek respectively, in September 1917. Nearly all theburials in Plots I to IX came from these Casualty Clearing Stations,whilst they operated in this area during the 1917 Battle of Ypres, upuntil December 1917. Plots X, XI, XIII, XIV and XV cover the datesbetween the beginning of March, 1918 and the 12th October, 1918, theperiod of the German offensive in Flanders, the British counterattacks and the final advance of August-September. The burials inthese cases were carried out almost entirely by fighting units. Thecemetery contains 1,556 Commonwealth burials of the First World Warand 37 German war graves from this period. There are also 22 SecondWorld War burials in the cemetery, all dating from the Allied retreatto Dunkirk in 1940. The cemetery was designed by Sir ReginaldBlomfield.

Robert (Bob) Holland was Company Sergeant Major in the 10th battalionof the Durham Light Infantry. He died of wounds received on 17/12/1917at the battle of Ypres. He received the MM for his actions. His medalis on display, in medal case 32, display group 45, at the D.L.I.museum, Durham. He is buried at Nine Elms British Cemetery in Belgium;the grave reference is: IX. D. 20.
