Nine Elms British Cemetery is located west of Poperinge. The cemeterywas begun and used by the 3rd Australian and 44th Casualty ClearingStations when they moved to Poperinghe (now Poperinge), from Brandhoekand Lijssenthoek respectively, in September 1917. Nearly all theburials in Plots I to IX came from these Casualty Clearing Stations,whilst they operated in this area during the 1917 Battle of Ypres, upuntil December 1917. Plots X, XI, XIII, XIV and XV cover the datesbetween the beginning of March, 1918 and the 12th October, 1918, theperiod of the German offensive in Flanders, the British counterattacks and the final advance of August-September. The burials inthese cases were carried out almost entirely by fighting units. Thecemetery contains 1,556 Commonwealth burials of the First World Warand 37 German war graves from this period. He was actually born on 16/07/1885 at Brandon Lane, but the familymust
have moved back to Spennymoor; as his siblings (older and younger than
him) were all born in Spennymoor. The birth wasn't registered until
26/08/1885 when they were then living in Duncombe Street, Spennymoor;
probably, only done after the upheaval of the movement of the family,
Brandon Lane and Spennymoor are about 6 or7 miles apart.
