John was born to John Holland and Mary Powell out of wedlock. John andhis wife Elizabeth were married in February and baptised their firstdaughter Mary in September. It would appear that the marriage wasforced on them by Elizabeths pregnancy whilst Mary Powell was at thetime of the wedding also pregant by John. The baptisms appear on thesame page of the parish register. There was no other John of anappropriate age who could be the father of Mary Powell's child and noJohn Holland and Mary Powell married around this time. It is probablethe child was brought up as John Powell.
